By whom bequeathed to the present owner.



Footnote:

The present lot is by family tradition believed to have been copied by the artist from the prime original still at Florence Court, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh.

The sitter was the son of John Willoughby Cole, 2nd Earl of Enniskillen (see lot 154) and Lady Charlotte Paget. He held the office of Member of Parliament for Enniskillen between 1844 and 1851 and Fermanagh between 1855 and 1880. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 7th Hussars and in the 12th Foot.



Condition report:

48 x 43cm (framed)

Oil on a small wooden panel. The support and paint layers are in a good condition overall. The paint layers are applied in a thin, smooth manner. The darker paint passages have developed a slight texture as it has dried. There are small areas of overpaint around the edges of the panel and on the sitter’s hand. The varnish is very matte and has yellowed with age. There is a light layer of surface dirt with brown accretions.
