Description

Victor-Jean Nicolle (French, 1754-1826) Italian capriccio scenes both signed "V J Nicolle" watercolours on card (a pair) 18.50 x 13.50cm (7 x 5in) Other Notes: Victor-Jean Nicolle was sent to Italy by King Louis XVI. Although best known for his Roman views, he also produced watercolours of other cities in Italy, including Bologna, Venice, Verona, Naples and Florence. Inspired by Hubert Robert, he is equally known for his architectural capriccios. His picturesque drawings were appreciated for their topographical accuracy and anecdotal detail, so much so that in 1810 he received a commission from Napoleon for fifty watercolour views of the principal monuments of Paris, intended as a wedding present for the Empress Marie-Louise and now at the Chateau de Malmaison.CONDITIONBoth slightly discoloured. On card and stuck to the mounts. One examined out of frame.  Some dirt and flies under glass. The glass on one of the items was broken and has been removed.
