Footnote: In the 19th and for most of the 20th century, different countries had different regulations with regard to the testing and marking of precious metal items before sale. So, it is not uncommon for items to be marked in the country of origin, and then remarked at the country of destination. In this example, the watch was made in Switzerland and has Swiss markings, but was also destined for Germany, so was marked with German import marks. Later it was imported into Britain by Stockwell & company and so bears British import hallmarks, too.
