About this lot

Description

A Fête champêtre signed lower left 'Mostyn' oil on canvas 70 x 90cm

Footnote: Provenance: Acquired by Frank Penman (1884-1963) grandfather of the present owner, possibly directly from the artist.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which appears to be unlined. The canvas is very stiff and the paint layers are thickly applied in many areas. There are minor undulations where the weight of the paint layers are pulling the canvas forward. In the green areas of paint drying cracks have formed revealing the light ground below. The paint in the figures at the right hand side is raised and cracked with areas of loss where the canvas is visible. The work is unvarnished. The glass of the frame is close to the paint surface and is very dirty on the inside. There are scattered losses to the gilded surface of the frame.
