Footnote: Tinei Mashaya is one of a number of contemporary Zimbabwean sculptors delivering the art of Shona Sculpture to the global stage. Deriving its name from Shona people, an ethnic group native to Southern Africa, the sculptural movement has been gaining international recognition since the mid-20 th century. Utilising stone derived from the Serpentine family, found in abundance in the Great Dyke Mountain Pass of Zimbabwe, Shona sculptors hold their medium in high esteem and have described the importance of allowing the material to reveal the beauty within. Popular subjects in Shona sculpture include totemic figures, local fauna and flora, and traditional Shona mythology. Mashaya demonstrated an early ability for drawing and, in 1992, dedicated his artistic efforts entirely to sculpture. His works have been exhibited throughout Europe, the UK, the US and South Africa.
