About this lot

Description

The Fish Market signed lower right on the crate 'T Chambers 1862' oil on canvas 29 x 44.5cm

Footnote: Thomas Chambers was active around Scarborough, specialising in maritime and coastal views. He exhibited five pictures at the Society of British artists between 1849 and 1858. In 1880, he married the owner of a millinery business in York and henceforth abandoned his painting career to run the business.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The paint layer is in a good, stable condition. There are localised areas of retouching in the foreground and the light patch to the right of the sky also appears to be retouching, possibly covering an old damage. The varnish is yellowed but even and glossy.
