About this lot

Description

Still life with a Wanli kraak bowl with peeled lemons, melon, grapes, peaches, an orange, and cherries on a table draped with green velvet cloth oil on canvas 63.5 x 74cm

Footnote: Theodor Aenvanck trained in Antwerp under Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1684). The present composition is closely related to a signed work dated 1654, ‘A Still life of fruit in a basket, pewter plate and oysters’, last recorded with Richard Green at Maastricht in 1992. Another signed example is at Knole House, Sevenoaks. This work is a new addition to the small oeuvre of the artist’s known works, which amounts as yet to less than ten. We are grateful to Dr Fred Meijer for proposing the attribution to Theodor Aenvanck based on photographs and he suggests a date in the mid-1650s.

Condition report: Christie's stencil to the reverse. Oil on canvas which has been lined. The paint layer is in a stable condition overall. The varnish is clear, even and glossy.
