Footnote: Provenance: By descent within the Hardy family; until acquired for Moulton Grange, Pitsford, Northamptonshire Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, Summer Exhibition 1858, no. 318 Sir John Hardy, 1st Baronet (1809-1888), was a British Conservative Member of Parliament. He was the son of John Hardy and his wife, Isabelle Gathorne of Kirby, Lonsdale. The sitter’s brother was created the 1st Earl of Cranbrook. Hardy was elected to the House of Commons for Midhurst in March 1859, but held the seat for less than two months. The following year he was returned for Dartmouth, a constituency he represented until 1868, and then sat for Warwickshire South from 1868 to 1874. On 23 February 1876 he was created a Baronet, of Dunstall Hall in the County of Stafford. In 1878 he was appointed High Sheriff of Staffordshire. Sir Francis Grant’s “Sitters’ Book”, preserved today in the National Portrait Gallery, records Hardy sitting in 1857. Hardy died in July 1888, aged 79.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which is unlined. There are several patches on the reverse of the painting mending old damages which have been retouched from the front. The paint layer has numerous areas of raised and flaking paint with scattered losses to the original material. The varnish is yellowed and there is a layer of dust on the surface. The gilding on the frame has suffered and is flaking with numerous losses.
