XXXV, 2011, p. 238; Galleries Online, Catalogue raisonné of Burne-Jones, 2020, https://www.eb-j.org/ The present work is a design for one of a pair of large lancets by Burne-Jones in the chancel apse at St. Cuthbert's, Melbourne Street, Newcastle. The second lancet is entitled Charity. Burne-Jones' account book notes 'Fortitude £20' under October 1896 (see Literature, Coley). The church of St. Cuthbert's has now been demolished and the windows are currently at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. Burne-Jones did many studies and drawings of figures of 'Fortitude' both for paintings and church windows, some of which are in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.Condition report: 140 x 67 cm framed. 124.5 x 61cm (sheet - according to the catalogue raisonne)Numerous folds and creases throughout. Pin holes mostly visible in top corners, but few also along the margins. A small tear along the top edge, directly above the figure's head. Paper appears worn and abraded, particularly around the figure's head. Some surface dirt under glass. Not examined out of frame.
