Footnote: Sicura was founded in the early 1950s by Ernest Schneider, at Grenchen in Switzerland. In addition to being a watchmaker, he was a visionary, pilot and microelectronics specialist and many of the specialist models incorporated the latest technology of the day. They have become extremely collectible, not only for their avant garde design and manufacture, but also because of their link to the famous Swiss watch brand, Breitling. Breitling was founded in 1884 and specialised in mechanical watches. They found themselves in financial difficulty in the 1970s because of the popularity of the new quartz movements. In April 1979 the Breitling family sold the brand name to Schneider, who had spotted the potential in this heritage brand. Ernest Schneider relaunched Brietling in 1982, moving the headquarters to Grenchen and focussing his energy on the brand’s development. The Sicura brand soon disappeared and Ernest Schneider remained president of Breitling until his death in 2015.
