Footnote:

Opened in 1701, the New White Hart and Three Cups was a coaching inn at Colchester which sat on the main route between London and the port of Harwich. Coaches ran daily through the town and the inn became an important stop for travellers heading to the Continent. Lord Nelson visited the Three Cups in 1801, as did the Prince Regent in 1813, and the Duke of Wellington in 1823. The inn closed its doors in 1965 and was demolished in 1968.

Condition report:

53 x 79cm framed

Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas tension is stiff and the picture is in plane. The paint layer is stable overall. Drying cracks have formed in some areas but these are stable. Small damages have been repaired, filled and retouched. These are slightly mismatched to the original but acceptable from a normal viewing distance. The varnish is glossy, clear and even. There are a few white accretions across the surface, possibly house paint. The surface has a slightly mottled appearance caused by surface dirt.
