Head of an elderly man, probably St Joseph oil on canvas 39 x 31.5cm

Footnote: Provenance: Professor Dr Passey (1888-1971) by 1952 and thence by family descent Exhibited: Leeds, City Art Gallery, 'The Leeds Art Collections Fund', 13th June - 20th July 1952, lent by Professor Passey, as 'Flemish 17th Century, Head of an Old Man' Very possibly a study for St Joseph in a composition of the Adoration.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which has an early lining. The canvas is in plane with good tension. There is some raised edges to the craquelure, notable in the thicker paint of the sitter's forehead. Overall the paint layer is stable. Overpaint is present in the darker paint passages, applied in a brushy, free manner. Strokes of overpaint have also been used to reinforce the sitter's eyes and hair. The gilding on the frame has a distressed appearance with scattered losses. The glazing is dirty both inside and out.
