Footnote:

Sovereign of the Seas was a clipper ship constructed in 1852 by Donald McKay of East Boston, Massachusetts. In 1854, she recorded the fastest speed for a sailing ship, logging 22 knots (41 km/h, 25 mph).



Condition report:

Framed 102.5 x 72cm

Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas tension is stiff and the picture is in plane. The paint layer is in a good condition overall. There are areas of overpaint across the painting, mainly located in the sky around the ships sails. The varnish is matte and even with a light layer of surface dirt. There is a loss to the right hand side of the frame not visible from the front - please see additional images.
