About this lot

Description

Kumi Sugai (Japanese, 1919–1996), Mohair wool tapestry, circa 1974,
wall-hanging, Royal Lesotho Tapestry Weavers, Africa, Woven 'Sugai 46/50' 210 x 170cm

Footnote: In the mid-1970s, alongside artists including Alexander Calder, Karel Appel, Yaacov Agam, and Joseph Lacasse, Japanese born artist, Kumi Sugai commissioned the Royal Lesotho Tapestry Weavers to create an edition of fifty mohair tapestries of one of his designs. Whilst principally known for his prints and paintings, the present lot, despite its incongruous medium, is typical of Sugai’s style, which often features a bright central motif and incorporates pop art, abstract expressionism, and minimalism.
