Braga, Móvel Brasileiro Moderno, São Paulo, 2011, pp. 152-153 Footnote: Growing up in the Brazilian coastal town of Belmonte, self-taught architect, designer and artist, José Zanine Caldas, spent his formative years watching local craftsmen carving entire canoes from single felled trees. This early exposure would, inevitably, inform the organic and sculptural designs for which Caldas is celebrated today.Initially working as an architect, Caldas established his architectural scale model workshop in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1930s where he worked alongside some of the most renowned Brazilian modernists of the era, including Oscar Niemeyer, Oswaldo Arthur Bratke and Lucio Costa. In 1948, after moving from Rio to São Paulo, Caldas opened a new studio, from which he created his ‘Z Artistic Furniture’ line. Adhering to humanist design principles, Caldas conceived a range of furniture which aimed to be affordable and accessible whilst still retaining design integrity and excellent build quality. Both angular and fluid, the lots offered in this sale are reflective of Caldas’ design ethos during the late 1940s and early 1950s.
