Portrait of Maria Brummell (b. circa 1785) when a child, half-length, in a large hat and holding a baby dog signed lower right 'J. Downman / Pt 1787' coloured crayons and watercolour on paper, oval 19 x 15cmFootnote: Maria Brummell was one of two sisters of "Beau" Brummell and according to an indistinct label on the reverse, she "ran away with Blackshaw and had 2 daughters Lady Charleville [sic., in fact Countess Linowska] and Baronne de Maltzan." Provenance: The sitter's niece Georgiana Brummell, Lady Pigott (1802-1886) and thence by lineal family descent CONDITION:Discoloured. Staining along the top edge. Appears to be pasted down to card. Worn edges to the original paper. Tear to the paper right of the sitter. Few tears to the oval mount which is attached at the corners.
