According to Dr Kennedy Scott's letter dated 24th July 2002, in which he confirms the attribution to John Berney Crome, the present painting is one of three known versions of this subject.

St Martin's Gate was a popular subject also painted by John Crome Snr., an example of which is in the Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery.

Condition report:

Framed 73 x 60cm

The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support laid onto a wooden panel. The adhesion between the panel and canvas appear and the paint layers are in a good condition overall. There are areas of overpaint across the surface, mainly located in the sky. The overpaint has been liberally applied but is reasonably well matched to the original. The varnish is clear and even.
