About this lot

Description

James Lawrence Clark (British, fl. late 18th-19th Century) Study of a cream bull dog in a stable signed "J L Clark . Son (?)" lower right oil on board 23 x 25cm (9 x 10in)
James Lawrence Clark was a painter of animals. Three of his sons followed in his footsteps as artists. Among these, James Clark (1812-1884) was particularly renowned as a horse painter and often included dogs alongside horses in his works. He himself had a son, James Albert Clark (1863-1955), with whom he produced paintings under the name of "James Clark and Son". The present painting, which is clearly signed "J L Clark" is most likely by James Lawrence Clark, whose dates are unknown. The addition of the word, which appears to read 'Son' suggests that he might have executed this work with one of his three sons, whom he trained.
