Description

oil on canvas (Dimensions: 118 x 84 cm)

(118 x 84 cm)

Footnote: The sitter was the eldest daughter of John Skerrett of Ballinduff, and sister of Michael Skerrett (1749-1785), the Archbishop of Tuam. She married Dr Oliver Athy of Galway on 2 October 1741. She was both born and married into one of the fourteen merchant families, known as the Tribes of Galway, who dominated political, commercial and social life of the city of Galway in western Ireland between the mid-13th and late 19th centuries.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. In the lower half of the painting there are old tears which have been repaired from the reverse with canvas and paper patches. The edges of the canvas are very brittle and are starting to tear. There are undulations across the canvas. There are localised losses to the paint layer but overall it is stable. The varnish is extremely thick, yellowed and no longer adequately saturating the paint layer below. There are several scuffs and scratches in the paint layer. The frame has been repainted with bronze paint which has darkened and the painting is poorly housed within the frame.
