Description

Henry George Hine (British, 1811-1895) Willingdon Hill, Eastbourne, Sussex inscribed with title lower left and signed lower right "H G Hine 1885" watercolour 32 x 64cm (12 x 25in)
Provenance: From the collection of the late Michael Holman Other Notes: Hine was the son of a Brighton coachman and was self-taught - learning by copying the Copley Fielding watercolours belonging to the local vicar. He was apprenticed to the London engraver, Henry Meyer. On leaving his studio, he went to Rouen and remained there for about two years. He returned, first to Brighton, then to London, where he became a professional wood engraver - and in 1841 extended his practice to drawing on the wood for illustrated journals. After his marriage in 1840, he settled in London and lived in Highgate from 1856 to 1868, and in Hampstead from 1868 for the rest of his life. He exhibited landscapes at the New Watercolour Society, becoming a member of the Institute of Painters in Water-colours in 1863.
Perhaps a little browning to the sky.
