About this lot

Description

William Pigott (1804-1875) mounted on his hunter with his dog in a landscape signed lower right 'Harry Hall / Pinxt 1843' oil on canvas 89.5 x 69cm

Footnote: The sitter by his marriage to the heiress of both, was owner of the Denston and Dullingham estates.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which appears to be unlined. The canvas tension is slightly slack and there are minor undulations. The paint layer has a network of age cracks which are slightly cupped but generally stable overall. At the lower half of the painting are two semi-circular lines of raised paint, caused by impact from the reverse. The varnish is even and semi-glossy with some dirt and fly spots. The frame has suffered from woodworm and the gilding is very worn and stained.
