Description

Gérard Mannoni (French, 1928-2020), an aluminium coffee table,
with rectangular plate glass top, signed and numbered III/VIII 34 x 113 x 70cm

Footnote: Provenance: From the collection of Claudine Auger (1941-2019), Belgravia, London Sculptor and designer Gérard Mannoni was born in 1928 to a rapidly mutating material world, at a time when new technologies and resources were being keenly explored by creators across all disciplines. This context would prove important for Mannoni’s career as, after his formal training at several important institutions and his apprenticeships in the workshops of Ossip Zadkine and Marcel Gimond, Mannoni would join Groupe Espace. Led by André Bloc, the members of Groupe Espace included sculptors, artists, and architects, all of whom were united in their belief that art and architecture should be a social, rather than an individual, phenomenon. Mannoni’s early works were chiefly worked in steel, concrete, and stone, though from 1968 these materials were largely abandoned in favour of glass and aluminium. Through their architectural and neo-plastic forms, Mannoni’s sculptures and designs clearly demonstrate both the influence of the Groupe Espace and the 20th century preoccupation with the exploitation of new technologies and materials.
