Description

Frederick George Cotman (British, 1850-1920) Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire signed lower left "F G Cotman 1875" oil on canvas 49 x 90cm (19 x 35in)
Provenance: Sir Edward Packard (1843-1932) and by descent Other Notes: Sir Edward Packard founded the Ipswich Art Society in 1874. He joined his father's chemical business at the age of 23 and painted in his spare time alongside fellow artists such as Frederick George Cotman. They both painted around Whitby, as well as Norfolk and Suffolk.
Oil on canvas which is unlined. The canvas tension is slightly slack but overall the canvas and paint layers are in a good condition. The varnish is even and semi-glossy but yellowed with fly spots and accretions. There are losses to the decorative surface of the frame.
