Description

François Vernay (French, 1821-1896), Autumnal Landscape, signed "F Vernay" on each side, oil and pencil on paper, double-sided, 21 x 31.50 cm. Known primarily for his still-life paintings, François Vernay also distinguished himself as a landscape artist. Little known during his lifetime, he is now considered as one of the most important representatives of the Lyon School.

Double sided oil paintings on a thin piece of board or card. There are undulations across the card. The paint layers have been thinly applied with the card support visible as a mid-tone in the compositions. The artist has marked out the composition in pencil before painting. The paint layers are in a good condition overall. Both sides of the frame are glazed.
