Artist's label to the reverse: Kenneth Elwell 4 North Bar Street BeverleyOil on panel. The panel has small splits in a horizontal direction, following the grain of the wood, otherwise the panel is in plane and in a good condition. The paint layer has drying cracks across the surface, which have formed as the paint has dried. The paint layer is in a good, stable condition. There is a layer of dirty and degraded varnish across the surface. The frame is in a good condition.White marks around the hooves appear to be smudges on the surface. The marks to the left of the horses' feet are light scratches. The appearance of the painting would be improved by removing the uneven, yellowed varnish and the worst of the drying cracks could be toned/retouched, so that they were less visually disturbing.
