Description

A Milkmaid with cattle in a river landscape inscribed lower left 'T S Cooper' oil on canvas 35 x 59cm

Footnote: Provenance: Cheffins, Cambridge, 29th November 2012, lot 497, when acquired by the present owner The present composition derives from a painting by Thomas Sidney Cooper dated 1836, now in a private collection (see Kenneth Westwood's Thomas Sidney Cooper: His Life and Work, 2011, vol. I, p.19, cat. no. O.1836.29; illustrated in colour, vol. II, p.96, plate 53). In the positioning of the cattle and the direction of the landscape with the riverbank on the right, however, the present painting is more likely closely based on the lithograph of the 'Milkmaid' in Cooper's Thirty-four Subjects of Cattle &c. Designs for Pictures., published by Thomas McLean in 1837.
