Description

Follower of Thomas Gainsborough, circa 1810 A shepherd boy and his dog sheltering in a storm oil on canvas 126 x 100cm (49 x 39in)
Provenance: Private collection, London Other Notes: The present painting dates to after Gainsborough's death, probably to circa 1800 to 1810, and is inspired by Gainsborough's "Shepherd". Attributions to either James Northcote or Thomas Barker of Bath might be considered. We are grateful to Hugh Belsey for his assistance with the catalogue entry.
Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas is in plane with good tension. The artists' choice of materials and techniques has led to wide drying cracks forming across the paint surface, these have been extensively retouched. The retouchings are reasonably well matched to the original. The varnish is clear and even. The frame is in a good condition.
