About this lot

Description

Follower of Jonathan Richardson (British, born circa 1665–1745) Portrait of a lady, half-length, in a blue dress and a straw hat, in a painted feigned oval oil on canvas, in a painted faux marble frame 74 x 61cm (29 x 24in)
Provenance: Mawley Hall, Shropshire
Oil on canvas which appears to have been lined. There is a dark, horizontal line of moisture or other material on the reverse which has caused undulations in the canvas. The paint layer is stable, there are a few small losses and raised areas of paint. There are localised retouchings which are prominent around the edges of the canvas which have a matte appearance. The varnish is yellowed, matte and uneven. The frame is in a good condition with a marble effect painted finish and a gilded sight edge.
