Description

Follower of John Constable, mid 19th Century The Lock Gate with figures to the foreground, the lock keeper and travellers with a heavy horse oil on canvas, unframed 144 x 115cm (56 x 45in)
Provenance: Private collection, London Other Notes: A possible attribution to Robert Burrows of Ipswich (1810-1883) can be considered.
Oil o canvas which has been lined. The canvas is in plane with good tension. The paint layer is stable although there are a few localised paint losses. There is extensive retouching across the surface covering drying cracks, these are fairly well matched to the original. There is a small damage below the trees to the right which has been crudely retouched. The varnish is yellowed and semi-matte.
