About this lot

Description

The Grand Canal with the Riva del Vin and the Rialto Bridge, Venice oil on canvas 24 x 32cm

Footnote: The present composition is clearly inspired by Francesco Guardi's paintings of the same subject, of which he painted several versions, including the examples held at the Wallace Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., and the Norton Simon Museum.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The dark red ground layer is now evident through the thin and slightly worn paint passages. There are areas of retouching in the sky which are well matched to the original. The varnish is matte and even. The black painted surface of the frame is worn and abraded. We believe this to date to the late 18th Century / early 19th Century.
