About this lot

Description

Portrait of two young girls, said to be members of the Trench family, the elder seated three-quarter length in yellow, the younger standing in blue holding flowers oil on canvas 102 x 118cm

Footnote: The sitters are presumably the daughters of Samuel Trench of Ducketts, one of whom, Susan (1713-1753) married John Berney of Bracon Hall, Norfolk. Provenance: Presumably by descent from one of the sitters, ancestor of the present owner

Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The picture is in plane, the canvas tension is slightly slack. The paint layer is in a stable condition. There are a few old losses and damages which have been repaired and retouches. There has been some degradation to the blue pigment which appears to have been corrected in areas with overpaint. Small localised areas of retouching in the face. The varnish has degraded becoming very matte and slightly pale. There is surface dirt on the front and reverse of the painting. The frame is in a good condition overall.
