English School, circa 1700 Portrait of Samuel Mellish (1634-1707), half-length, in a brown wrap and white cravat inscribed upper left "Sam Mellish Esq. / Son of William / ob. Oct. 26.1707. aet. 74" oil on canvas, in a faux marbled painted frame 74 x 61cm (29 x 24in)
Provenance: Mawley Hall, Shropshire
Oil on canvas which is unlined. There is a canvas patch on the reverse at the lower left hand side reinforcing a small damage. The canvas tension is slightly slack with undulations across the surface. The paint layer appears to be in a good, stable condition. The varnish is even and glossy. The frame is in a good condition with a marble effect painted finish and a gilded sight edge.
