English School, 19th century The wreck of HMS Breadalbane, crushed by ice in the Arctic pencil, wash and bodycolour 34 x 60cm (13 x 23in)
Other Notes: Regarded as one of the best-preserved wooden ships ever found in the sea, HMS Breadalbane was a three-masted merchant ship which was launched in 1843. It was crushed by ice in the Northwest Passage off Beechey Island in Lancaster Sound on 21st August 1853. The ship sank during its search for John Franklin's lost expedition.
