St Simon, the Duke of Portland's bay racehorse in a stable signed lower right 'Emil Adam.1890' and inscribed lower left 'St Simon' oil on canvas 30 x 37cm

Footnote: Provenance: William Waugh (1862-1927), a trainer at Balaton Lodge, Newmarket, His Sale, London, Christie's, 27th June 1927, where bought by Algernon Dunn Gardner (1853-1929) St Simon was bred by Prince Gustavus Batthyany and foaled in 1881. Subsequently sold to the Duke of Portland, and stabled at Heath House, Newmarket, he was undefeated in all nine of his races, including the Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup, and Epsom Gold Cup. On retiring from racing and being put to stud, St Simon was awarded leading sire in Britain & Ireland from 1890-1896, and 1900-1901, and leading broodmare sire in Britain & Ireland between 1903 and 1907 and again in 1916. He produced winners of over 500 races, and amongst his most notable offspring were included Memoir, Semolina, La Fleche, Mrs Butterwick, Amiable, Persimmon, St Frusquin, Diamond Jubilee, La Roche, and Winifreda.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which is unlined. The picture is in plane and the paint layer is in a good condition overall. The varnish is slightly yellowed but even and semi-glossy. The painting is glazed with a slip between the painting and frame. The frame is in a good condition.
