Footnote: The son of Sidney Barnsley, and the nephew of Ernest Barnsley, two leading figures of the British Arts and Crafts movement, Edward Barnsley is remembered today as one of the most important designers of British furniture of the 20th century. Inherited from his influential family, and the education he received at Bedales School which extolled the virtues of practical skills and craftsmanship, Edward Barnsley’s early furniture designs were chiefly in the Cotswold style, though later examples demonstrate how his style matured throughout his career, with greater emphasis placed on fine stringing and elegant curves. Although he remained largely faithful to traditional timbers, such as oak and walnut, popular with proponents of the Arts and Crafts movement, Barnsley’s work is notable for the inclusion of more exotic woods, including rosewood and black bean, as can be observed in the present lots.
