Footnote: Doxa was founded in 1889 by Georges Ducommun as 'Georges Ducommun, Fabriques Doxa' in Le Locle, Switzerland. The company became famous in 1908 with the introduction of an 8-day watch movement subsequently used by German soldiers in World War I. When Ducommun died in 1936, he was replaced by Jacques Nardin, grandson of the famous watchmaker, Ulysse Nardin. Doxa returned to the battlefield in World War II with a series of popular chronographs used by German aviators and this example may well be one of these pieces. Doxa continued a strong association with Germany after the war, supplying the German World Cup football team with gold watches, and in the 1975 film, 'Three Days of the Condor', Robert Redford wears a Doxa watch. In 1997, the Doxa brand was purchased by the Jenny family of Bienne, Switzerland and continues to this day, specializing in divers' watches.
