Crimean War, a series of thirteen autographed letters.
Lieutenant-General Sir Edwin Markham (1833-1918) British Army officer who served in the Crimean War and was present at the Battle of Alma, the Battle of Inkerman and the Siege of Sevastopol. Thirteen autograph letters signed, 64pp., 8vo, various places (Transport Ship Colgrain, Camps at Scutari, Varna, Sevastopol etc.), April – October 1854, to his mother, Lucy, and sister, Laura. The often-lengthy letters provide an interesting insight into Markham’s military activities and observations during the Crimean War from the time of his departure to the Crimea up to the early stages of the Siege of Sevastapol and include details of living conditions (in flea and rat-infested barracks), outbreaks of cholera, skirmishes with Turks and Greek robbers, military manoeuvres, combat against Russian forces etc., and also include several references to Lord Raglan, Omar Pasha and others.
