About this lot

Description

Circle of Pseudo-Pier Francesco Fiorentino (Florentine, fl. circa 1460-1500) The Sleeping Christ Child, a fragment oil on panel, in a tabernacle frame 24 x 43cm (9 x 17in)
Provenance: The Villiers family and by descent
The painting is executed on a wooden panel which has been cut down from a larger composition. The panel has a vertical warp and has woodworm damage at the reverse, mainly along the lower edge. There is an old spilt in the panel which has been reinforced at the reverse with a wooden batten. There are other smaller splits in the panel. The paint layer has suffered from losses along the splits and other localised areas. There is retouching in some areas, mainly around the edge.
