About this lot

Description

Portrait of Colonel John Robinson (1679-1734) half-length, in green, in an armoured breastplate oil on canvas 74 x 61.5cm

Footnote: The sitter married Frances Bromsal. Provenance: By descent from the sitter at Denston to the present owner

Condition report: Oil on canvas which appears to be lined. The canvas tension is poor with undulations across the surface. Old holes and tears have been patched from the reverse and crudely filled and retouched. Overpaint appears to be confined to areas of damage. The paint layer has localised areas of fine lifting and a few small, scattered losses. The painting has a thick, yellowed varnish which is uneven. There is a layer of dust across the surface. The frame is in a good condition.
