About this lot

Description

Circle of Michael Dahl (Swedish, 1659-1743) Portrait of Mrs Wilmot, head and shoulders, in a gold lace-trimmed dress oil on canvas, oval, unlined 73 x 60cm (28 x 23in) Provenance: Packington Hall, Warwickshire Both canvases are unlined and on their original oval stretchers. The portrait of a gentleman has a tear in the lower left. Both canvases are slightly slack and have become brittle with age but are generally in a good condition for their age. Both paint layers have developed a network of age cracks, on the portrait of a lady these are more pronounced with raised and vulnerable areas. There is minor wear and abrasion to the paint layers. Both works have surface dirt including insect droppings. The varnish layers are matte, dull and slightly yellowed. There are extensive losses to the gilding on the frame. The portrait of a lady has an unstable split at the lower edge. Both frames need attention.CONDITIONThe canvas is unlined and on its original oval stretcher.  The canvas is slightly slack and has become brittle with age but is generally in a good condition for its age.  Paint layers have developed a network of age cracks.
