Description

Charles Hope - A George III silver pair cased pocket watch, the outer (and inner) case by Jeremiah Mince, London 1818, 55mm diameter, inset with a number of watch papers, the lid activated via a push button, the open faced pocket watch with white dial, 45mm diameter, black Arabic numerals and mismatched hands, front loading mechanical key wind fusée movement ornately engraved and signed 'Cha Hope London 11128' with pierced and engraved balance cock, gross weight 141.5g
In the early to mid -18th century, it was common for watches to be housed in "pair cases". A pair-cased watch has an inner case which held the movement, and an outer case which enclosed and protected the inner case. Since the inner case was not dust-proof because of the key-holes, an outer case provided additional protection from dust and dirt.
