Footnote: 'Nirvana' was a brand name used by C. Robert & Cie of La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. In 1854, three lower standards of gold were introduced in Britain - 15ct, 12ct and 9ct - in addition to the already established 22ct and 18ct gold. In 1932 both 15ct and 12ct were discontinued and a new standard of 14ct gold was introduced. Although the discontinued 15ct hallmark is not uncommon and is often seen on antique jewellery, the full 12ct hallmark is particularly rare, and so the 12ct mark on this example makes it a particularly collectable timepiece.
