Description

BEDDOES (Thomas) Hygeia: or Essays Moral and Medical on the Causes Affecting the Personal State of Our Middling and Affluent Classes, 3 vols., first edition, Bristol 1802-03, 8vo, some light staining and toning, worn half calf.

Footnote:

'Beddoes’s essay ‘On the nature and prevention of some of the disorders, commonly called nervous’ (the ninth in this collection) contains one of the most comprehensive early studies of incipient epilepsy. The tenth essay, a continuation of the ninth, includes Beddoes’s plea for exact terminology to describe mental diseases, and his proposal that full-blown insanity should be studied in conjunction with incipient madness in order to gain the knowledge necessary for treatment and prevention. Beddoes is perhaps best know as the man who ‘discovered’ Humphry Davy’ (Norman 160)
