Description

The Month of March - Girls with chickens in a farmyardoil on canvas30 x 26cmProvenance:The French Gallery, 120 Pall Mall, London;Property from a Suffolk country houseFootnote: The present lot was possibly painted by Hamilton for use as reference in an etching series titled The Months of the Year, engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi in 1793 as The Month of March. It is possible that the appearance of the corners within an apparent oval may have been caused by the spandrels of the painting being at one time covered by an oval slip. It is also possible however that these corner areas outside the oval could have been added by the artist, or at a later date.Condition report: 55 x 51cm (framed)Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas is in plane and the paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. There is the faint impression of an oval with marks at each corner. It is possible that the painting was once shown in an oval slip which has caused abrasion to the paint surface. The corners have extensive areas of brushy overpaint. Overpaint has also been used in the central composition to reinforce certain areas. The varnish layer is very thick in areas of very yellowed. In the upper right quadrant there are some white marks across the surface.
