Footnote: Born on the Isle of Wight, Thomas Buttersworth began painting after joining the Royal Navy in London in 1780. The accuracy of many of his subjects would indicate that they were painted on location. He established himself as a painter of marine scenes, executing ship portraits of larger naval and merchant vessels and important naval engagements. These included his famous Battle of Trafalgar, now in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas has good tension and the picture is in plane. There are a few raised areas of paint which could be old fill which has cracked. The paint layers have many areas of retouching across the surface. The varnish is semi-matte and even. The frame has a large loss to the moulding at the upper left corner.
