Footnote: Provenance: By descent within the family of the sitter Henrietta Mary (May) Poynter was the half sister of Edward Poynter, by her father, Ambrose Poynter's second marriage. She wrote a biography of her forefather, General Robert Bell, which was published in the Journal of the Royal Artillery. In 1859 she asked her brother to paint her portrait - he was 23, and studying in Paris at the time.

Condition report: Painted frame is damaged. The panel has a vertical crack. Old label to the reverse.
