Footnote: Provenance: Charles Plante Fine Art, Georgetown, Washington D.C., USA Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin (1770-1852) aspired to pursue a military career and was educated at The Ecole Militaire in Paris. Following his graduation in 1785, he joined the French Guard. However, after the start of the French Revolution in 1789, he fled to Switzerland and later settled with his family in New York in 1793. After an unsuccessful experiment trying to make a living as a farmer, he took up portraiture. He is now primarily known for his profile portraits of distinguished sitters which included American statesmen and presidents, such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. His works are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
