Description

Attributed to Aubrey Beardsley (British, 1872-1898) A woman in feathered hat and crinoline skirt, standing with drapes behind her signed lower right with initials "AB" pen and ink, unframed 28 x 21cm (11 x 8in)
Provenance: Marjorie Gwynneth Townsend-Whitling and by descent Marjorie Townsend-Whitling lived abroad for many years and moved in artistic circles with her close friendship with Alfred Bastien in Brussels and later Stanley Spencer in Cookham. Born Marjorie Gwynneth Townsend-Whitling on 19 April 1895 in Norfolk, she married Arturo Brown Castellanos, the Uruguayan Cultural Attache to Blegium and lived in Brussels in the 1920s. She moved back to Cookham, England in 1933 with her daughter. Her friend Stanley Spencer wished to paint her portrait but she turned him down in favour of Bastien.
