About this lot

Description

A Winter landscape with figures skating and conversing on a frozen river indistinctly signed or inscribed with initials “A [?]” lower left oil on panel 20 x 28cm

Condition report: Oil on panel. The panel has a strip of old canvas on the reverse. Overall the panel is in a good condition with a slight horizontal warp. The thin paint layers are in a stable condition. They have suffered from wear expected from a painting of this age. There is extensive retouching across the surface covering this wear. The varnish is clear, glossy and even. The modern frame is in a good condition. Oil on oak panel. The panel was constructed from a single horizontal oak board. Analysis of the tree-ring sequence from this provided a date for the board. This board was derived from a tree sourced from the eastern Baltic area of Europe. The result suggests that this panel dates from c. 1632-1650. A full dendrochronology report is available upon request.
