Footnote: This emerald is believed to be from the world famous Chivor mine in Colombia. Chivor, meaning 'our farmfields - our mother', is currently the only privately owned emerald mine in Colombia. The emerald deposits were first found in 1537 by Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, but the mines were abandoned until 1886. Since then, it has yielded large quantities of fine gem quality emeralds. The rough emerald crystals are generally small, but in rare cases they can exceed the size of a man's thumb.
